Episode Five: Understanding your strengths, taking risks and the value of volunteering

WORK180Mar 2, 2020

Kate Hobbs is a passionate friend, family member, mum and change maker who finds it hard to walk past an opportunity to make a difference. She started her professional life as a marketing consultant. However, she spent the majority of her career loving the mining industry after falling into it by accident. In her spare time outside her role as Transformation Champion at Oz Minerals, Kate is a director of Variety, the children's charity, a long term Variety Basher, a founding member of the Oz IMM’s Council for Diversity and Inclusion, and a member of a range of industry and event committees. She believes in building real connections, continually challenging yourself and having fun!

Kate discusses market disruptions, future studies and changes we can’t even predict. Humans are naturally resistant to change but can build our change-resilience in part by understanding that we learn through mistakes and failure. Taking risks is a muscle that needs to be built, but understanding and focusing on our strengths means the risks may well change the course of your life. Kate also talks about volunteering, Inclusion, and making a difference.

On this podcast episode, Kate shares:

  • How she accidentally fell into mining and her role as Transformational Champion

  • Her fascinating role looking at disruptions and how they will respond

  • That humans are resistant to change as our brain 'discounts' things that we're not used to or expecting

  • Building resilience to change

  • Working without failure and mistakes is impossible, but we're learning when we're making mistakes

  • We need to be willing to take risks and not know all the answers; jump and build the parachute on the way down

  • We can build our 'risk-taking' muscle to become opportunists

  • A 'defining' risk Kate took that changed the course of her life

  • Changes that feel like they're taking you in the wrong direction may well be taking you the exact direction you desire

  • The desire to prove someone wrong is not a good reason to determine a life path, and how to stop worrying about what other people think

  • Identifying and focusing on your strengths gives you an advantage at work

  • The children's charity, Variety, who give every child the chance to live a good life, where Kate volunteers

  • Volunteering to move your career forward, and Kate's volunteer work with an industry body

  • Kate's work driving gender diversity and equality in mining, her role in Women in Mining, and desire to make a difference

  • The importance of bringing men into the conversation around D&I
