Creating these devices involves a close partnership between hardware and software engineers, designers, and manufacturing. We are currently building the next generation and Surface needs you!

The Surface Data and Analytics for Software and Hardware (DASH) team is seeking a talented Data Scientist with a background in Windows software development and telemetry analysis. Our team provides various data insights to the Surface organization and its partners to drive quality. Our problem space is virtually boundless, ranging from traditional software and hardware telemetry analysis, to sentiment analysis, user behavior analysis, return analysis, manufacturing analysis, and more. We collaborate across E+D, striving to understand the complete customer experience with a Surface device.


Our crew is specifically responsible for connecting our SW/FW/HW development teams to telemetry based insights through prerelease device selfhost data. Doing this well requires the flourishing selfhost community we have in Surface, living with our prototype devices day in and day out, providing quality feedback. We are looking for a talented contributor to help shape our road forward and improve the quality of our Surface devices through selfhost telemetry analysis. An example project we've been starting to work on is applying ML techniques to predict consumer experienced quality, using features selected from known-biased and low-volume prerelease selfhost telemetry data assets. Helping the Surface business better understand drivers of satisfaction and dissatisfaction, and measuring our prerelease devices by these measures, is of utmost importance to success. Connecting these insights to our partner SW/FW/HW development teams is critical to quality for every new device we design and ship. A successful candidate will have keen interest in designing and developing data assets that serve both business decision makers (with structured reporting, storytelling) and front-line engineers (with curated data assets in Kusto, ad-hoc analysis). Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics or Engineering related field, or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of experience in software or hardware development
  • Experience with Cosmos or equivalent technologies
  • Experience using Kusto, Splunk, Elastic Search, or equivalent technology to work with curated data
  • Experience using PowerBI to create structured reports
  • Proficient C#, Python, and/or C++ design and coding skills
  • Some exposure to ML/AI techniques
  • A team player that works well with other disciplines and isn't afraid of new challenges
  • Desire to operate in an agile development environment
  • High tolerance for ambiguity and ability make progress in the face of it

Experience in one or more of these areas is a plus:

  • Windows Telemetry
  • Windows Operating System Development
  • Modern Azure services like Data Bricks
