The Azure Cognitive Services team is on a mission to advance the state of the art in AI and deliver towards our company vision for how intelligent cloud and intelligent edge will shape the next phase of innovation. The Azure Cognitive Services team includes top researchers from across Microsoft to create a center of excellence in speech, computer vision and natural language.

We are looking for exceptional interns to work on cutting edge research in various AI areas, including:

1.Language, including Natural Language Understanding & Generation, Knowledge Graph, Pre-trained Language Models

2.Speech/Audio, including Speech Recognition, Speech Enhancement/Separation, Speaker Recognition/Verification/Diarization, and Audio Visual Fusion.

3.Vision, including Image Classification, Object Detection, Segmentation, Tracking, Network Architecture Search, and Vision-Language Understanding.

The mission of our group is to make fundamental contributions to advancing the state-of-the-art in AI technology. To this end, we conduct research on forward-looking topics such as text summarization, end-to-end conversation transcription, audio-visual fusion, and large-scale visual recognition. Our research has contributed, and will continue contributing, to various Microsoft products, such as Microsoft Teams, Office, Bing, Cortana, and Xbox as well as third party applications through the Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services.

The interns are expected to utilize and design state-of-the-art results in deep learning in NLP, Speech and Vision, and implement models using frameworks such as PyTorch and Tensorflow.


Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.


In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science or a related STEM field.
  • 1+ year experience in Language, Speech, or Vision research with hands-on deep learning experience.
  • Experience with open source tools such as PyTorch, Tensorflow, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Track record of publications in related top conferences (e.g., ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, ICASSP, Interspeech, CVPR, ICCV, ICML, NIPS, ICLR).
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
