The team is responsible for designing, building and operating our unified global datacenters; managing the demand planning and capacity utilization of our unified infrastructure; and responsible for all of the operations needed to run the physical infrastructure (including supply chain, hardware, power, security, and workflow teams). At the forefront of the action in CO+I is our Global Datacenter Operations group (GDCO)!

The Critical Environments Solutions Engineering group (CESE) within GDCO is responsible for establishing global Critical Environment (CE) infrastructure requirements and standards, developing and delivering CE efficiency and optimization programs and projects, and supporting 24/7/365 mission-critical CE instrumentation infrastructure within Microsoft’s global datacenters.

CESE is seeking a Principal Service Engineering Manager to join our CESE Infrastructure team. In close collaboration with peer teams and stakeholders, this role will lead a team of service engineers charged with the design, integration, and operational support for CO+I’s Critical Environments CE infrastructure across all datacenters. The primary accountabilities for the role are managing a team of service engineers in meeting Operational SLAs, compliance requirements, security mandates, and related datacenter construction work. The key areas of functional responsibility include ensuring the CE server infrastructure meets planned capacity needs for existing and upcoming sites, collaborating to ensure that the associated software stack meets evolving design, security, and compliance standards, and providing 24/7/365 server infrastructure operational support. This individual will use a growth mindset to develop, foster, and leverage partnerships with CEISE engineering teams, peer teams, Datacenter Operations teams, CO+I teams responsible for the design and delivery of datacenters, key groups affiliated with Microsoft Datacenters (Business & Property groups), and key decision makers across CO+I.

The ideal candidate will possess a range of experience in building, managing, and mentoring a team of engineers, ensuring the team delivers innovative, compliant, secure, high quality, efficient, valuable, and available solutions that enable CESE to meet organizational objectives.


Required Qualifications:

  • Citizenship Verification: This position requires verification of US Citizenship to meet federal government security requirements.
  • Minimum 5 years’ service engineering experience - preferably with Azure-based solutions.
  • Minimum 5 years enterprise security and compliance experience - preferably with deep understanding of on-premises/Cloud components and regulatory needs.
  • Minimum 9 years’ people management experience with track record of hiring and building a high performing, cohesive team where diversity is valued.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Proven history working across teams and managing stakeholders to create lasting relationships that produce valuable outcomes.
  • Manage data reporting; Power BI & Kusto dB background is preferred.
  • Experience organizing and overseeing the design, engineering, and integration of multiple concurrent, complex solutions, meeting properly planned and funded budget, timeline, features/functionality.
  • Demonstrated ability driving the delivery of useful documentation artifacts.
  • Ability to balance competing demands for resources and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Proven ability to apply clear critical thinking in complex, stressful situations.
  • BS in Computer Science, Business, Engineering, or a related field - or equivalent practical experience.
  • MS in Computer Science, Business, Engineering, or a related field - or equivalent practical experience.
  • Previous experience with US Federal government cloud
  • Active US Federal Government security clearance.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with senior executives and customers. Strong experience influencing with and without authority.
  • Prior experience maintaining datacenter Critical Environment systems and applications.
  • DC background and experience.
  • Working knowledge of vendor support contract terms, conditions, mechanism, and procedures.
  • Ability to escalate, report and engage as needed to ensure a project is delivered as needed across teams.
