Business - Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. CO&I is responsible for delivering Microsoft web portals, Live and Online Services around the world including infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability. Our focus is on smart growth, high efficiency, and delivering a trusted experience to customers and partners worldwide. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.

Specific Job Task – The datacenter civil, structural and architectural (CSA) intern will be part of the team responsible for the development of Microsoft’s industry-leading datacenter designs. Work will span new technology and advanced concepts, pre-programming, design development, construction through the turnover to Operations.

Responsibilities

The successful internship candidate will be a current civil engineering and/or architecture student who is highly motivated to learn and grow. This individual will have excellent organizational skills and be dedicated to developing excellence in your field. The ability to effectively work among multiple teams of architects and engineers to deliver projects according to defined scopes, schedules and budgets is essential.


The civil, structural, architectural intern will work alongside highly technical teams and be involved in the civil, structural and architectural components of global datacenter projects. This individual will aid in facilitating system coordination and organization throughout the full lifecycle of a datacenter project. Work will encompass greenfield, brownfield, retrofit and expansion of large-scale facilities. Civil/site work may include assistance with geotechnical report analysis, topographic and boundary survey reviews, Codes/Covenants/Restrictions, coordination with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) and utility capacity constraint reviews.
Experience with CAD, Revit, Sketchup, Bluebeam, and BIM software is highly desirable.


This internship candidate must have excellent communication skills, be highly organized and exhibit a high level of motivation to learn. A strong desire to pursue expertise in commercial and industrial architecture and infrastructure, especially relating to datacenter design is required. Any industry experience in civil, structural or architectural design will be highly advantageous.


The candidate must also be able to work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment and must be a person of integrity with a methodical and detail-oriented work ethic.

Qualifications

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture or Civil Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Demonstrated ability to write, speak, and present information effectively
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills; a self-starter, a leader who is highly proactive
  • Commitment to learn excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Experience using Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, and Excel including effective reporting/presentations abilities
