Microsoft Azure is one of the largest and most robust cloud computing services in the world, running workloads spanning data analytics, machine learning, HPC, database, search, office and productivity, and many others. Cloud architecture drives significant improvement in cost and power efficiency, and sustainability by providing both variety and enormous scale in datacenters across the globe. Our group is driving analysis and characterization of workloads on Azure and specifying new architectures (from Software to Servers to Silicon) to dramatically improve the datacenter by optimizing across hardware and software for unique workload needs and taking advantage of intelligent sharing and economy of scale. Due to the size and growth rate of the cloud, optimizations have potential for enormous impact.
Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.
As a Computer Architect working on Azure, you will be responsible for understanding critical workloads that run on Azure, characterizing them with performance monitoring and profiling tools, finding critical bottlenecks, and then proposing new hardware architectures at the system or silicon level and/or creating a set of hardware and software recommendations for next generation Azure deployments and demonstrating the value of those recommendations by modelling improvements using C/C++/python and running simulations to produce insightful data and analysis.
In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. - Currently enrolled in a Masters or PhD program in Computer Architecture, or Electrical Engineering and Computer Science field.
- Must have some experience (at least 1 year academic or industrial) writing hardware simulators and evaluating performance of workloads on computer system architecture and/or microarchitecture.
