About the Role
As staff infrastructure engineer on Connected Sites, you will help drive the roadmap and technical vision for the infrastructure that powers our video streaming, metadata search, and storage systems. Given Samsara’s track record of explosive growth, we expect to support several orders of magnitude more customers, camera streams, and vision features over the coming years. As a technical leader on the team, you will drive the design and development of solutions that support our anticipated scale as well as any new product offerings.
This is a unique opportunity to join a small team and have a large impact across different sides of the business as it grows quickly to meet customer demand. As an early engineer on the team, you will have a massive impact on our product’s success and be involved in driving overall engineering strategy at the staff level.
About the Team
Connected Sites is Samsara’s newest product line, focusing on a computer vision-powered site visibility solution for industrial, warehousing, and office environments. Our mission is to drastically improve workplace safety and operations by providing powerful insights into what is happening across entire facilities, helping prevent injuries and uphold safety guidelines. Our first product is an ML-enhanced video recording device that stores camera footage, runs the footage through deep learning models, and allows users to view video camera streams and ML insights via a cloud dashboard and mobile application. In the future, we may launch entirely new products and grow these new businesses from the ground up.
In this role, you will:
  • Identifying and addressing performance bottlenecks in our video streaming infrastructure.
  • A new system for indexing our ML metadata to improve search times by 10x+.
  • Infrastructure to load test our system and expose scaling bottlenecks.
  • A new system for automating 24-hour footage backups from on-prem devices.
An ideal candidate has:
  • Has at least 8 years of experience working on backend infrastructure, or experience working at the staff level at another organization.
  • Has experience working on a production system that manages large amounts of data.
  • Has experience deploying production services within the AWS ecosystem
  • Enjoys designing new systems end to end, thinking through failure cases and impact of design choices on the customer experience.
  • Video streaming infrastructure experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Golang is a plus.
