The Office of the Chief Technology Officer Social Technology (OCTOST) group advises the company's leaders on the social implications of technology and how Microsoft can help direct the future of technology and the tech industry to address significant social challenges, such as climate change, inequality, stagnant productivity and threats to democracy. We build closely on research in a range of disciplines, especially economics, political science, sociology, law, computer science and philosophy and we engage in significant external engagements with the research community and beyond. Our primary focus is on social impact through engagement with our leaders and product, legal and strategic groups throughout the company.

Responsibilities

Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

We are looking for an intern interested in synthesizing the latest economic, political science and sociological research to help our leaders understand how we might redirect technology to augment rather than replace human labor, the design of digital taxes that could help encourage achievement of that goal and how urban policies might be evaluated quantitatively for their tendency to support inclusive growth. Like all research internships, we will support the intern in producing an original and publishable piece of research out of the summer and we are looking for an intern who also wants to go beyond this on a practical level to consider feasible designs that could be implemented in practic

Qualifications

In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. Required Qualifications

  1. Must be a PhD candidate in the quantitative social sciences or other student with equivalent training to an early stage PhD candidate in a quantitative social science.
  2. Must have at least two years of total course work in data science and/or econometrics and/or equivalent course work.
  3. Participation in the Research Internship Program requires that you are physically located in the United States or Canada for the duration of the internship

  • Commitment to social change and the use of technology for social good
  • Experience engaging with business and/or policy issues beyond purely academic settings
  • Ability to work on diverse teams across many academic and extra-academic disciplines
  • Broad interests beyond field of primary academic study
  • Ability to make policy-oriented work complementary with academic publishing
