The Microsoft Healthcare Team is working at the intersection of machine learning and biomedicine. We are a diverse team of engineers, scientists, designers, user experience researchers, and medical doctors who are working to empower individuals, doctors, and providers to improve health outcomes through more intelligent use of data. Our team selects concrete challenges in healthcare and develops end-to-end solutions though machine learning, cloud services, design thinking, stakeholder insights, and service blueprints.

We are looking for a research intern with expertise in biomedical informatics, user experience health research, and human-computer interaction to help us understand user needs, workflows, and pain points in healthcare. We are looking for an intern who likes conducting foundational research and is comfortable with ideation and user-centered design. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical abilities, conduct user research, interviews and surveys, customer journey maps, service blueprints, wireframes, and prototypes.

Responsibilities

Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in a PhD program in Biomedical Informatics or related health behavior, design, or human factors engineering program.
  • Participation in the Research Internship Program requires that you are physically located in the United States or Canada for the duration of the internship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to conduct independent research.
  • Knowledgeable in user research methodology, qualitative and quantitative.
  • Ability to develop an original user research plan.
  • Excellent communication skills, cross-group, and cross-culture collaboration.
  • Experience conducting stakeholder interviews in healthcare or public health settings.
  • Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Publication record in health sciences or biomedical informatics.
  • Ability to identify stakeholder needs and pain points.
  • Experience translating user needs and developing empathy for the user thru a deep understanding of user-centered design methods and applications.
  • Ability to create customer journey maps, service blueprints, and apply innovative approaches to communicate user insights to diverse teams.
