The Adaptive Systems and Interaction group at Microsoft Research AI pursues advances in principles of intelligence and interaction and applications of these advances to continuously improve computational systems. The team includes groups exploring foundations of sensing, learning, and decision making, search and retrieval, and human-computer interaction.

Responsibilities

Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

The project will focus on algorithmic advances towards creating machine learning models and systems which can collaborate with people successfully. Currently, there is a strong ambition in both industry and academia for using AI to augment human capabilities and improve their productivity. However, little is understood about the characteristics and capabilities needed in AI systems to bring this premise to reality. Therefore, the agenda of this project is to rethink how AI systems are designed and trained towards this objective and how techniques developed for interpretability and explainability and for developing trust contribute to this goal. In addition, the project will include conducting real-world studies to validate the impact of the proposed methods across different domains and algorithms.

Qualifications

In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. Required Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in a PhD program in CS, EE or a related STEM field.
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience in conducting research, writing peer-reviewed publications.
  • Must have at least 3 years of experience in software development either in industry or for academical projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Conducting research in at least one of the following areas: Human-AI collaboration, machine learning, decision-making under uncertainty, human computation and crowdsourcing, human cognition, explainable artificial intelligence and interpretability.
  • Hands-on experience in designing, training, and evaluating machine learning models.
  • Hands-on experience in designing and running human studies either in the field, lab, or in crowdsourcing platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop original research agendas.
  • Must be able to collaborate effectively with other researchers and product development teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, cross-group, and cross-culture collaboration.
  • Ability to think unconventionally to derive creative and innovative solutions.
