For every hour doctors spend with their patients, they spend two hours on process and clerical tasks. And when they do meet with patients, they spend most of the time glued to their computer taking notes and entering orders. Not only does this lead to doctor burnout, but it can also be extremely distracting for patients, especially in current times where increasing levels of doctor-patient interaction is taking place online. We are EmpowerMD, a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, designers, and medical experts in Microsoft Healthcare building ambient intelligence for the clinic using machine learning and AI. This will let doctors focus on what they do best: taking care of patients.

We are looking for an innovative, collaborative, and highly motivated research intern to join our efforts in machine learning for healthcare data, where we are developing state-of-the-art deep learning and natural language processing technology to build ambient intelligence for the clinic. Both supervised and unsupervised methods will be used to analyze, summarize, enhance, and interpret large collections of doctor-patient interactions and produce research outputs that can improve the doctor-patient experience (see Project EmpowerMD:

Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

Additional Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will collaborate with a team of top-notch scientists, engineers, and healthcare researchers to:

  • Analyze real-world data to explore opportunities for modeling healthcare data
  • Design and implement state-of-the-art ML and NLP systems
  • Conduct rapid experimentation and deep engagement for real-world delivery and impact
  • Propose novel approaches for unsolved research problems


In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. Required Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, or a related STEM field.
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience in machine learning, natural language processing, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Passionate about real-world applications and impact in healthcare
  • Strong verbal and writing communication skills
  • Track record of publications in top ML or NLP venues
  • Experience with recent NLP & deep learning advancements, e.g., BERT, transformers, attention, LSTMs, sequence to sequence, etc.
  • Experience with natural language generation, text summarization, production ML/NLP pipelines
  • Experience with large datasets
  • Experience with deep learning platforms, such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.
  • Experience working with knowledge graphs
  • Experience in explainable AI
  • Experience in working with healthcare data is a plus; willingness to learn a must!
