Office 365 Substrate Search Extensibility team are bringing the power to the substrate to intelligently understand and model the content in the substrate from search perspective. We also own the infrastructures backs that power.

Office 365 Substrate is critical to Microsoft’s cloud strategy and it is experiencing tremendous growth, with 120 million monthly active commercial users and hundreds of millions of consumer users. The Substrate is a massively distributed cloud service with O(exabyte) data handled by O(100K) servers in O(100) data-centers around the entire globe, and it's a joint effort across Office 365 teams as well as Windows and Bing.

The team is driving the service backend engineering for Microsoft Enterprise Search experience. More specifically, you will be working on search settings, flexible schema, scaled search storage and related areas. The engineers in this team play a critical role in driving the technical details of a variety of backend service projects spanning multiple areas.  You will have to understand the design, code and features of many different areas, and quickly come up to speed.  You must be able to design and implement services that are high scale, low latency, always on, and low cost to maintain and operate.  You will need to influence other developers to come up with the right design and architecture for their components and make them the model for common patterns going forward.  You will need good partnership and influence skills and be both motivated and able to work across multiple sub-teams spanning Microsoft 365, Azure and .Net to deliver engaging engineering systems.  You will need to analyze and make decisions based on complex and ambiguous data points.  You will help define the strategy for how we should move forward through hands on contributions.


A degree in computer science/computer engineering, another STEM field, or any other discipline. Individuals with a degree in a non-STEM field who have retrained as a software engineer and demonstrated a commitment to lifelong learning are strongly encouraged to apply.

- 4+ years of software development experience and familiarity in one or more OOP languages, such as: Java, C#, C++.

- Continuously building stronger coding, design, and problem-solving skills.

- Server and/or service experience is desirable.

- Understanding of data analysis and machine learning is beneficial, but not required.

- Ability to quickly ramp up on new technologies.
